Roughly a one-hour walking tour that includes information on raw materials, machinery, personnel and projects.  A step by step process on the manufacturing of concrete block and landscape products.  Closed toe shoes and safety eyewear will be required and provided as needed.  Appointments can be made for operating and non-operating hours.  One on one question and answer time will be provided after tour completion.

Concrete Field Testing and Resolving Strength Disputes

 

A one-hour seminar that includes a slide presentation reviewing the ASTM specification and testing procedures for the quality control of concrete in the field. Tests for slump, air content, unit weight and the manufacture of compressive strength specimens are demonstrated.  Non-destructive strength testing and the use of cored specimens are discussed, as well as the recommended procedure for resolving low strength disputes.

 Concrete Materials 

A one-hour slide presentation covering concrete ingredients and the fundamentals of concrete mix designs.  Subjects include portland cement, water-cement ratio, concrete aggregates, air entraining, admixtures, batching, mixing and transportation.  Based on "The Design and Control of Concrete Mixtures" published by the Portland Cement Association, and the personal experience of the speaker.

Finishing and Curing
 

A one-hour slide presentation reviewing standard field practices for the placing, finishing and curing of concrete.  Both formed concrete and flatwork finishing are covered.  Topics also included are flatwork surface defects (scaling, blisters, plastic shrinkage cracking) and the controlling of contraction cracking.

  Designing and Building Concrete Parking Lots 

A two-hour seminar promoting the use of concrete pavement for industrial driveways and parking areas.  The many benefits of concrete pavements are discussed.  Convenient methods of construction are reviewed and the simple design procedures outlined in ACI 330, “Guide for Design and Construction of Concrete Parking Lots”, are introduced.

  Fininshing Concrete Slabs with Color and Texture 

A one-hour seminar that reviews the procedures for various architectural finishes, including exposed aggregate finishes, dry shake color finishes, stamped pattern finishes, and inlaid paper pattern finishes.  Concrete need not necessarily be grey and broom finished.  Driveways, patios, sidewalks and floors can be constructed to provide a myriad of color and pattern combinations limited only by the designer and the skill of the craftsman.

  Manufacturing Portland Cement 

A one-hour seminar including a slide presentation reviewing the cement manufacturing process.  All of the major steps in the process are explained, from quarry operations to raw grind burning and final grind including the quality control procedures necessary to change calcium carbonate, alumina, silica and iron oxide into Portland cement.

  Mortar Presentation 

A one-hour slide presentation designed as a general review of standard construction practices and specifications for masonry mortars.  Topics include a revealing look at ASTM     C 270, the standard specification for mortars, measuring mortar materials, mixing, tooling joints, hot and cold weather procedures and the prevention of efflorescence.

  Proportioning Concrete on the Basis of Field Experience 

A two- hour workshop designed to review ACI 318 specifications covering the submittal of mix design proportions based on previous field experience.  Using test results from previous jobs, a ready mixed concrete producer can compile the pertinent strength data in a decisive format for approval by any specifying agency, bypassing the lab mix design procedure.

Following the video, architects will have the opportunity to interact with personnel with an average of fifteen years of masonry construction experience to address issues and/or concerns with proper masonry construction techniques.
