Planning
|
|
| Sketch
a detailed diagram of the area to be paved, including all measurements
required to calculate the amount of material to be needed. We recommend
the area being paved contain a form of edge restraint. Select the shape and color of the paving stone to be used, and determine the laying pattern for your project. Before you dig call your local utility company to locate any underground lines. |

| Base
Preparation
|
|
| Remove
old pavement and/or existing soil, then excavate to the proper
depth depending on the type of traffic. Use your plate compactor
to compact subgrade soil. Each pass of the compactor should overlap
the previous pass by 4". The excavation should be 6" wider
than where your edge restraint is to be used. To ensure adequate
drainage, the original ground must be evenly graded and properly
sloped. We recommend you use a slope of 1/8" per foot. Spread crushed aggregate (304 crushed limestone) uniformly throughout the excavated areas and rake level. Using a mechanical plate compactor, compact the entire area evenly. Start compacting on the outer perimeter of the area and work towards the center, overlapping with each pass. A sprinkling of water, prior to compaction, will increase the density of the base Make at least two complete passes for each layer. The compacted base must be uniform and should conform to the contour of the finished job. The elevation of the compacted base should be a uniform 4" below the paving surface for patios and walkways, and 12" below the paving surface for driving applications. Edge Restraints Following the completed base preparation, edge restraints must be installed to prevent lateral movement of paving stones. |

| Screeding
|
|
Screeding
is a procedure to smooth and level the bedding sand material,
prior to the installation of your paving stones. |
|
| Paving
Stone Installation
|
|
| Begin
placing the pavers on the screed bed in the pattern you wish to
use. It is important that pavers being installed are taken
from various bundles to ensure proper color distribution. Start
at an edge or corner if possible. This will maximize the use of
edge stones and minimize the amount of cutting. Hand place the paving stones close together. With the installed kneeling on a flat board, the next row is placed. Work from right to left, then left to right, and so on, one row of pavers at a time. Avoid stepping on the edge of the pavers to prevent shifting. The occasional use of a masonry string line will ensure that your installation pattern will continue to run true throughout your project. To verify accuracy, the string should run along the front row of pavers. Each paving stone should lightly touch the string. A screwdriver or similar object can be used to move the pavers into proper alignment. Any paving stone cutting should be done upon completion of the project. Cutting should occur away from the installed paver surface to avoid any staining from concrete dust or residue. |

| Completion

Once
all pavers have been placed, sweep the entire paving surface clean
in preparation for tamping.
